About the Publication

Writing for the Part of Recovery Nobody Prepares You For

Field Notes is the editorial publication of Soberminds®, created to explore what happens after addiction — not the quitting, but everything that comes after it.

Field Notes exists because getting sober and rebuilding a life are two different projects, and almost everything written about recovery only covers the first one. Quitting has a date. Rebuilding doesn't. It happens in the years afterward, in decisions nobody's watching, and most of what actually matters during that stretch never makes it into a pamphlet or a meeting share.

These stories matter because they're specific — lived experience, written down honestly, not generic advice borrowed from somewhere else. Recovery writing that could apply to anyone usually helps no one.

The publication is organized around four editorial pillars, because rebuilding a life after addiction isn't one project — it's several, running at the same time. Identity is the question of who you're becoming once the old version stops making decisions for you. Discipline is how that becoming actually gets built, one repeated action at a time. Clarity is what sobriety reveals once the fog lifts, whether or not you're ready to see it. Peace is what eventually comes after all of it holds long enough to stop feeling fragile.

If you're not sure where to start, pick whichever pillar sounds like the chapter you're actually in right now. Every article links back to its pillar, and every pillar links out to the others — the whole thing is built to be explored, not read start to finish in order.

Every new article published here lives under one of four pillars — identity, discipline, clarity, or peace — because rebuilding a life after addiction is never just one project. Some weeks the writing leans toward the quiet discipline of showing up when nobody's watching. Other weeks it's about the fog of early sobriety lifting, or what peace actually looks like once the chaos stops. The latest additions to that ongoing work are below.
